Science at Atidaynu is all about preparing our students with the tools they need to investigate, question, and learn about the world around them. Therefore, we approach science with hands-on learning activities that open the doors of curiosity. This month we have continued learning about the human body.
Our students have engaged in projects to learn about the five senses, including a salt versus sugar mystery where we used our five senses as clues. The students also created interactive notebooks that reflect their learning of the past months. Learning about the five senses and understanding what they can tell us, allow our students to actively reflect on their own experiences.
Furthermore, we have also been learning about body systems, including the skeletal, muscular, digestive, and circulatory systems. Instead of just memorizing facts, our students have created models to aid their understanding of the different systems. For instance, we created a digestive system to represent the process, from chewing the food to breaking it down with “stomach juice”. We made Ziploc hearts to help students understand how blood is carried through our veins. The students also created an individualized running vocabulary list to keep track of all of the material we have covered.
Science class is filled with games, stories, and discussions about how our body works. In science, we hope to inspire this future generation to think critically about the world, and what better way to start than with learning about ourselves and our bodies.
